GUEST WORKSHOP: Repairing Cloth Bound Books

AKA: Cloth re-back- using conservation standard techniques, including hinge repair, spine repair, joint repair and any arising issues.

This workshop is a great starting place to learn about book conservation and repair.

It’s a stepping stone to repairing at home and feeling confident with bookbinding processes.

David Ashman of Book Studio One

David is founder & principal conservator of Book Studio One. He has worked in the printing, paper & conservation sectors for over 50 years. He qualified as a conservator through completion of a Diploma in Book & Archives Conservation at the Colchester Institute & a Higher National Diploma in Conservation Studies from Lincolnshire College of Art, UK.

David has worked in senior positions for Nottinghamshire County Archives in the UK, the National Library of New Zealand, the State Library of Western Australia & Auckland Libraries. In the private sector he was co-founder & principal conservator with Triptych Conservation Services Ltd.

Bring with you:

  • 6x books / to choose 1 to repair – best if they are not of particular value or importance as this is an opportunity to practise, learn and make mistakes

  • Approx A5 to octavo in size

  • Text block to be in fair condition, ie not requiring major paper repairs or resewing. Otherwise,  joints can be split, and boards/spine detached

  • About paper quality, grain and weight

  • How to un-assemble a text block from the cover

  • How to retain the character and integrity of historic bindings

  • How to make and apply an oxford hollow

  • How to create a new spine for your book

  • How to repair inner joints

  • How to use bookbinding / book conservation tools and materials

  • How to adapt these techniques to repair at home

  • How to re-back a cloth covered book

Take Home:

  • A model you have created, from your own book, of techniques learnt (all repair materials are provided)

  • Examples of repairs using conservation techniques

The Binding Studio is at 731 Scenic Dr, Henderson Valley, Auckland 0612. There is off street and on street parking available.

Please note there are no public buses to this area. The closest public transport is to Swanson Train Station. An Uber from the train station is approx $20.

This workshop will only go ahead with 4 or more participants (or at TBS’s discretion.) You will be refunded in full if numbers are not reached.

72 hours notice is required for cancellations (you will be refunded your payment minus transaction charges.)

Cancellations under 72 hours will result in a 50% refund only.
